2008 Houston Pride Parade Grand Marshals

Pride Houston announced the Grand Marshals for the 2008 Pride Parade at a special event at Cafe Adobe on Monday, March 24, 2008.

The Male, Female, Honorary and Honorary - Organization Grand Marshals will preside over the nighttime Houston Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Pride Parade on Saturday, June 28, 2008. They were each selected over several other nominees by a vote among the entire community.

The 2008 Houston Pride Parade Grand Marshals are Dalton DeHart, Male Grand Marshal; Kelly McCann, Female Grand Marshal; Julie Eberly, Honorary Grand Marshal; and the Aids Foundation Houston, Honorary Grand Marshal - Organization.

Following are some of the accomplishments of each of this year's Pride Parade Grand Marshals.

Dalton DeHart has been an outstanding member of our community since arriving in Houston in 1985. You can hardly go to a GLBT Function in the Houston area that you won't see Dalton running around lining up people for a picture. It is his pictures that have captured those special moments and are later seen in the Houston Voice, OutSmart Magazine, TXT Texas, and the Gem. Since 1986 he has shot over 12,000 rolls of film and over 700,000 pictures. His love for the community is seen as he moves people together with "OK darlin' you need to move over here and darlin" you need to stand there". He has developed an online data base of those pictures that can be researched for use today and far into the future.

Dalton's dedication does not end with just taking pictures. He supports all of those groups and meetings that he attends. He buys dinner tickets, silent auction items, and tickets to events that he gives away.

In 1987, he joined EPAH, Executive and Professional Association of Houston. In that organization he won the award for Outstanding New Member, served on the Board, won the Outstanding Member award in 2003-2004, and served as Directory Chair. He has also been a member of Four Season's, Lambda Legal, and HERA.

His other awards include Outstanding Person from "A Christmas Songfest", the Barry Petry award from the Imperial Court of Houston, and Outstanding Volunteer from the Houston GLBT Community Center. Recently he received the Community Paragon award from Montrose Counseling Center. December 6, 2007, was declared Dalton DeHart Day in Houston by Mayor Bill White.

Dalton defines the term "role model". His support, hard work, and positive image, are significant contributions to the GLBT community.

Kelly McCann, chief executive officer of AIDS Foundation Houston, is one of Houston's exemplary and highly visible lesbian leaders. Since 1979 she has conducted her personal and professional life as an out lesbian, never faltering, never changing her pronouns, and never wavering from being proud of who-and what-she is.

Whether she is tossing dollars to a drag queen at a fundraiser in a bar, rubbing elbows with benefactors in River Oaks, discussing housing for HIV-positive citizens in the mayor's office, explaining safe-sex methods to high-risk inmates in prison, representing Houston at a United Nations AIDS conference, helping establish a camp for HIV-infected African children in Botswana, or simply taking her mother to the grocery store, Kelly McCann does it all as an out-and-proud lesbian.

Julie Eberly is a supportive mainstay of Houston's GLBT community, easily recognized and loved by anyone who has fallen into the realm of her sparkling smile and all encompassing hug.

As a longtime development director for AIDS Foundation Houston, Julie has been instrumental in raising much needed funds for those living with and affected by HIV. You will often see her deftly working the crowd at events like Art for Life exhibition, Mukuru Arts of AIDS concert series, the annual World Aids Day luncheon, Houston's AIDS Walk, Dining for Life, and Cabaret for a Cure.

AIDS Foundation Houston, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation founded as Texas' first organization dedicated to HIV prevention, education, and services. The mission is to create positive social impact through the innovative management of HIV/AIDS and other chronic diseases.
